The VetPet Box Difference

The Goals Of Our Service

A box full of veterinarian approved products completely customized for your pet, delivered to your door each month. The VetPet Box service was launched with clear goals in mind:

Quality Wellness Products

Provide you, the consumer and loving pet owner, with exposure to #1 recommended veterinary quality wellness products. If you think your pet would benefit from long term use of these products you can discuss them with your regular vet!

Educational Material

Provide you with educational information about commonly seen health issues, so that you can be better equipped to identify symptoms and signs earlier, and then have a more informed discussion with your veterinarian.

Fill The Information & Resource Gap

We know that it’s hard to discuss everything you (and we vets) need to, regarding the health of your precious pet, in just one 20-minute visit a year. We hope that this service helps to bridge the gap in owner education and will provide you with information and resources that help you give your pet the absolute best care possible.

*Please note that this service does not provide medical advice. Medical advice can only be given if I have personally examined an animal. Please see your veterinarian if you have concerns about the wellness of your pet.

Our Toy Selection Process

Pets need toys! They need mentally stimulating and durable toys that allow them to satisfy natural urges such as chewing, hunting/stalking and scratching. Without proper toys, many animals can end up getting themselves into trouble, or worse, into the hospital and onto the surgery table.

At VetPet Box we vet our toys using the following process:

Durable Toys

We select the most durable toys on the market for our “most aggressive chewers.” If you’ve selected this option in your profile, please note that you will likely not receive many toys that have stuffing or squeakers. Many of our partners stand by their tough toys and offer a product replacement if your pup happens to defeat their toy!

Enamel-Safe Toys

We also keep in mind the dental health of your pet and try to select enamel-safe toys for your pet. Please not that some pets may have enamel deficiencies (older pets and Distemper virus survivors) and that you will need to use your best judgment as to which toys are appropriate.

Mentally Stimulating

We try very hard to find toys that are mentally stimulating for your pet. We love to keep a pet engaged in “figuring out” a toy.

Exciting & Fun For All

Additionally, we try to send toys that dogs can see and get excited about! Dogs see shades of blues and yellows best, so whenever possible, we chose toys in these color families!

Lastly, we want our toys to be FUN!! For you, for your pet and to serve as a bonding experience between you both!

*Please keep in mind that it is impossible to 100% guarantee that a toy will be safe for all animals in all situations. Please only give your pet toys while he or she is supervised and if toys become damaged, remove them immediately.

It’s really upsetting to both the owner and the veterinarian to see a cheap $3 toy turn into a $3000 surgery, or in the saddest cases, death. This is actually how Dr. Steph ended up with her dog, Chewy.

Our toy selection process is designed to avoid some of the more common medical issues seen in pet hospitals as a result of pets playing with improper toys. Most commonly, problems occur because of lack of any toys supplied at all, improper sized toys supplied, or toys are given to pets that are just not durable enough. Oral trauma, gastrointestinal blockages and tooth enamel injuries are some of the more common problems seen when pet owners give the wrong toy to play with.

Our Treat Selection Process

Ensuring Quality

Most people don’t realize that there is no official regulatory group that oversees the label claims on pet foods and treats. For this reason, we pay for all of our treats that come from a company without a veterinary nutritionist on staff to be analyzed blindly by an independent lab to ensure that what’s on the bag is what’s in the bag… and then we take it one step further. We then have the product and its results vetted by our veterinarian and a board certified Veterinary Nutritionist. Yep… we’re pretty serious about this stuff!

In addition, all treats we endorse must be made in either the USA or Canada

Allergic Pets

If you have a pet that suffers from food allergy, you will need to indicate that in their chart. Most food allergic pets are itchy! Food allergic dogs typically itch (chew, lick, rub, scratch) their paws, ears and rear constantly. Food allergic cat are trickier…cats can be itchy anywhere!! They may or may not have lesions associated with the itchy areas. Usually they are just red in those areas, unless there’s a secondary infection due to all of the self-trauma!

More than 90% of animals that suffer from food allergies are allergic to the protein source in the food (usually chicken or beef); on rare occasions, pets can have allergies to grain. Many people have adverse reactions to grain, so marketing strategies have capitalized on this idea of “grain-free” for pet foods, too. If you prefer to feed grain-free, no problem at all! It’s certainly not going to hurt your pet, but it just might not be doing what the bag claims, either! We do offer a grain free option for our products, so if you do think that your pet fits into this rare category, we can absolutely take care of your baby!

If your pet is a protein allergic pet, we will try to lean towards fish, peanut butter or hydrolyzed products. A hydrolyzed product is basically a protein that is (in a very high tech way) broken down into its building blocks (amino acids) and delivered to the GI tract in a way that the body cannot recognize it in a way to have an allergic reaction to it! Fancy stuff, huh!?! Most attempts to alleviate food allergy are aimed at strictly excluding the offending protein from the diet and trying the pet on a “new” or “novel” protein. This is one that they have NEVER been exposed to before. For example, a dog that is allergic to chicken would not get chicken or turkey or duck (similar protein profiles) for AT LEAST 8 weeks to see if the itchiness subsides. This is called a diet trial. Please talk to your veterinarian for guidance and recommendations regarding diet trials.

Raw Foods

Out of concern for human health, VetPet Box will not be including any raw food or treat products in our deliveries. We understand that there is a lot of hype surrounding feeding raw foods, but there has not been enough compelling evidence to justify the health risks that these raw foods can pose to the homes we deliver to. Raw diets can be contaminated with bacterial pathogens (E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter) and parasites and there is potential for contamination of the home in areas such as the kitchen, or other food prep or feeding areas, and the yard (or anywhere fecal material is found). This could expose family members to zoonotic pathogens (transmittable from animals to humans), especially vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly and the immunocompromised.

The American Veterinary Medical Association, The American Animal Hospital Association, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association have all adopted statements discouraging feeding raw or undercooked animal- source proteins to dog and cats. If you do choose to feed your pet these products, please let your veterinarian know as they may want to implement additional screening throughout the year as a part of your pet’s wellness routine.

We know you want what’s best for your pets!
